Top 5 Laundry Tips to Help Reduce Microfiber Pollution

Posted

Your washing machine is producing an alarming amount of microfibers with every load of laundry. It is proven that some fabrics and materials tend to shed more and the age of the piece of clothing is a factor also but in the end, everything sheds.

Tip 1: Wash your clothes less: Refrain from washing certain articles of clothing unless it is truly dirty. The more you wash an article of clothing the more it sheds and it ages the item. Older garments tend to shed much more than a new one would. Spot cleaning is always an option.

Tip 2: Buy clothing made from natural fibers: Natural fibers like cotton, wool, hemp and silk are all biodegradable, meaning in time they will biodegrade if they are released into the environment. Synthetic fibers like polyester, nylon, rayon and spandex are plastic non-biodegradables, meaning they will never biodegrade after being released from your washing machine.

Tip 3: Avoid doing small loads: Doing large loads of laundry will reduce the friction between the numerous pieces of clothing, meaning less fibers are being released as the end result. If possible, wait to do a load of laundry until you have a full load.

Tip 4: Choose Front Loading vs. Top Loading Washing Machine: Studies have found that front loading washing machines cause less shedding then a top loading washing machine would. The reasoning to that fact is front loading machine uses low levels of water and top loading machines that have a center agitator could cause more friction causing more shedding.

Tip 5: Consider a lint filter for your washing machine: Most washing machines do not incorporate a lint filter within the machine. For those that do, the effectiveness is unknown. If microfibers being released from your washing machines is a concern, a lint trap or filter should be considered. Some research is required to find which would be the best option for your set up.
